Conan O'Brien @ Dodge Theatre

Booked as "The legally prohibited from being funny on television tour"...Conan O'Brien, America's funniest and best talk show host, made an epic appearance in Phoenix Friday night. Playing to a sold out Dodge Theatre, and none of that sissy "half capacity" Dodge Theatre... Conan seriously rocked the house.

The evening started with Conan's house band playing 2 songs on their own with LaBamba and Mark Pender taking turns on lead vocals. Everyone was there except Max Weinberg... But it was still a lot of fun watching that band play. The horn section at one point ran through the Theatre playing along with the rest of the band on stage. It was nice to see them get a chance to shine, I smiled while they played.

After the band played, there was a short, humorous film about Conan's state of being after the tonight show.... And the training leading up to the tour. I was restricted from shooting the band playing or the the video... But was allowed to start once Conan walked on stage. The house went nuts when he went on. This was the rowdiest crowd I've ever seen at the Dodge. Conan bathed in the applause... Strolling across the stage greeting the crowd before diving in to the show.

It's hard to commentate on a comedy show, but Conan was very much as "on" in person as he was on The Tonight Show. It was a lot of fun to see live. My Conan-side press contact who oversaw all the photogs as we shot worked on the Tonight Show as well. I asked her about the tour, she said it has been amazing... Sold out every city... And had to add an extra date in Vegas, which was where they were headed next. It's a great testament to Conan's staying power with the fans.

All in all it was an amazing night. I only wish I wasn't shooting from the sound board.

The third and last secret warm-up gig for the UYI tour. Special guest performance by Shannon Hoon of Blind Melon. Axl mentions how the chorus to 'Right Next Door To Hell' was written about his next door neighbor. Slash says they are filming the video for 'You Could Be Mine' for the new Terminator 2 movie. After 'You Could Be Mine,' Axl asks the crowd, "Have you ever heard the expression break a leg? Well, I think I just did." Axl actually injures his heel and is forced to wear a brace on it for the first few weeks of the UYI tour. Before 'Don't Cry,' Axl says how Shannon's band was covering the song a few years back. 'Welcome To The Jungle' is dedicated to the 3rd Street Hell's Angels.(www.gnrontour.com)

    * Side 1 is live in Santa Monica 11-Dec-1981 (first show).    * Track 3 appears on Stage #6, edited down to 03:06, but here it's unedited: 05:36.    * Track 4 is the same recording as on Apocrypha (Santa Monica, 11-Dec-1981, early show). Someone throws food on stage; Zappa stops the song and makes him eat it.    * Tracks 5-6 are from Crush All Boxes (an unreleased album planned before Tinsel-Town Rebellion), but "Doreen" fades out earlier here and is not complete (02:47 vs 02:15).    * Tracks 7-8 & 16 are live at the Palace Theater, Hollywood, 22-Jul-1984, with George Duke guesting on "Truck-Driver Divorce".    * Side 3 is live in Munich 31-Mar-1979.    * Track 10 is an "Outside Now" solo from Munich 31-Mar-1979, similar to "Outside Now (Original Solo)" on Guitar; it also appears on Lectures where it's called "Shut Up & Play Yer Guitar Again".    * Tracks 11 & 13 are the Sleep Dirt CD mixes, but longer edits: "Flambay" is 10 seconds longer here (a bass ending), and "Spider of Destiny" 20 seconds longer (the Sleep Dirt version is edited in the middle and end).    * Track 14 is from the Sleep Dirt CD.    * Track 15 is a part of a live 1981 version (about one and a half minute of the head).    * Track 16 is a 1981 studio version (the same recording as on Apocrypha).    * Track 17 is live at the Palace Theater, Hollywood, 22-Jul-1984, with George Duke and Johnny "Guitar" Watson guesting. It has a unique intro, but is available with better sound quality on All You Need Is Glove.
